Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Myelodysplastic Syndrome is also called as Myelodysplasia  , a group of hematological conditions that cause ineffective production or dysplasia of all blood cells but the lymphocytic lineage and it mainly occurs in the oldage people. It causes anaemia, neutropenia , thrombocytopenia etc.

Names of Myelodysplastic Syndromes: ( and the cell line affected)

1. MDS with single lineage dysplasia ( MDS SLD)

It affects the ealry cells of any one type of blood cell, either WBC , RBC or platelet forming cells called Megakaryocytes.

2. MDS with multilineage dysplasia ( MDS MLD )

The cell lines affected are RBC , WBC and / the platelet forming cells called,Megakaryocytes.

3. MDS with excess blasts ( MDS -EB)

In this condition, very early forms of blood cells called ' blasts ' are in abundant when comparing with the number of normal blood cells in the blood.

4. MDS with isolated del:

Usually RBCs are affected with this condition and there will be chromosomal abnormality for developing cells in the bone marrow

5. MDS with Ring sideroblasts:

This condition may affect either one type, RBC , cell type ( single cell type) or may affect the different type of cells ( multy cell type )

6. MDS unclasssifiable : The cell types are not fit for one particular condition, but seemed to be different types of abnormality such as chromosomal abnormality and shape abnormality in many of the cell type in bone marrow.

There are two ways to study receptor responsiveness in cultured cell lines: use a cell line that naturally expresses the receptor of interest; and transfect a cell line with a gene for the receptor you are interested in in order to ensure large numbers of this receptor. Taking into consideration what you know about G protein-coupled receptors and about measurement in pharmacology, briefly discuss what the possible advantage(s) and disadvantage(s) might be of each of these approaches.
