Obama is driving in his car and suddenly his car starts to make a weird sound:
Obama: “Oh no! The muffler sounds bad… What if I have to take it to the maintenance shop?... I can’t afford the expense… I’d have to draw the money from Jamie’s college fund… What if I can’t afford his tuition?... That bad school report last week… What if his grades go down and he can’t get into college?...Muffler sounds bad…”
… And so Obama’s worrying mind spins on in an endless loop of ruminating thoughts, and it’s causing him lots of negative emotions.
Obama is in a very haphazard state of mind. He has a lot of things to cater to and so is not able to decide how to proceed. In such situations , negative emotions flood mind with hopelessness and anxiety.
Martin Seligman who is father of postive psychology coined two models namely Character strength and virtues and PERMA model. Both mirror the positive aspects of mind .
Character strength are 24 traits that are there in an individual which are categorised in 6 virtues. A character is roleplay of thoughts, actions and feelings.
PERMA model on other hand is about Postive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and achievement. It was a model given by Martin Seligman which defines life as a whole, full of positive energy and well being.
Obama in his situation can try the following steps:
- Accept the situation at hand.
- Look at the brighter side of life in order to lessen the negative feelings.
- Change the negative to positive by appreciating things around him
- Label the events as positive and look for the positive element in it.
- Practice gratitude
