Do hard work, intelligence, ambition, tenacity, maturity, and other personal qualities guarantee success? They are important factors, but as Francis Adu-Febiri and Everett Ofori point out in Succeeding from the Margins of Canadian Society: A Strategic Resource for New Immigrants, Refugees and International Students, sometimes they are not enough. That is because we all live and operate within a social system, and sometimes the system does not reward hard work, intelligence, ambition, tenacity, and maturity equally for everyone. Sociologists use two approaches to understand the social reality. Macrosociology focuses on the social structures that exist within a society and examining how those structures create the social world. Microsociology deals primarily with the small group interactions of daily life. What are some of the challenges that may be faced by a new immigrant or international student when first arriving in Canada?

Expert Solution

Hard work, intelligence, ambition, tenacity, maturity, and other personal qualities provides a better path to succes. But there are else many things that should also determine our success.

The challenges faced by a new immigrant when first arriving in canada are :

  • Language barrier : In canada the official language is english and french. So a person who is not prominent in these languages face much difficulties in communication.
  • Accent : Even if know english and french, accent of the language can make difficulties to understand.
  • Transportation : one should have a keen knowledge on the places to where he/she have to travel. Otherwise we may get cheated by the taxi drivers.
  • Racism : The immigrants have to prepare thier mindset that racism is prominent in canada eventhough different people with different cultures lives there.
  • Food : we can't get our local foods there and if we need it, then we have to cook it. Even if we get those food, they may be very costly or we may have to go to particular regions to get it.
  • Weather : There are two major seasons in canada and they are summer and winter. Summer season is very good. We can go for outing or any picnics. But winter season is very cold. We have to put sweaters and jackets to prevent cold. So we have to get highly prepared for winter seasons by buying sweaters, jackets, boots, gloves, caps etc.
  • Isolation : when we are a new comer, we feel a little bit isolated. It is because we had came from the world of our friends, parents, neighbours and relatives.
  • Culture shock : we find some cultural differences when we go to canada. Because they have their own styles in every works and their own way of living.

Thanks!..

Do We Work Too Hard? The second part of this discussion board is to address the question of whether we, in the U.S., work too hard. One of the limiting resources in our economy is time. As a society, we make choices about the allocation of time between work and leisure (i.e. anything that is unpaid). In the U.S., most workers are eligible for overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours in a week; whereas, most European workers...
