1.     Provide for me a brief history of the major boycotts at the Olympic Games (what boycotts and why they happened) as well as a brief history of the doppelgänger nations appearing at the Olympic Games. Be sure to tell me why each of these things is significant.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Major boycotts

1964 Summer Games, Tokyo

Post Hiroshima Nagasaki bombing, this was Japan’s chance to the world to showcase that they had recovered. However, North Korea, Indonesia and China did not participate in this event as they were part of the GANEFO (Games of the New Emerging Forces). GANEFO was formed to oppose IOC since it had suspended Indonesia to participate in the Olympics.

1976 Summer Games, Montreal

In this event, 30 nations boycotted, most of which were African nations. The African nations saw New Zealand as a supporter of apartheid and hence had urged IOC not allow NZ to participate in the Olympics. IOC did not pay any heed and hence the boycott happened.

1980 Summer Games Moscow

In this event, 65 nations including US had boycotted the event since erstwhile Soviet Union was involved in the Afghan war.

1984 Summer Games, Los Angeles

To seek revenge for the 1980 boycott, close to 14 eastern bloc countries boycotted this event'

Unfortunately I do not understand the second part question. How can doppelganger of nations exist?
