Like all equilibrium constants, the value of Kw depends on temperature. At body temperature (37C), Kw=2.4x10^-14. What are the [H3O+] and the pH of pure water at the body temperature? Show all work.

Solutions

Expert Solution

H3O+ is nothing but H+ + H2O or we can say it is just H+ as water (a pure liquid) will not be counted.

ICE Table:

                     H2O            <==>        H+      +     OH-
Initial              1                                0               0

change           -                                +x              +x

equilibrium     1                                x                 x

K = [H+][OH-] / [H2O]
2.4 x 10-14 = x2
x =1.54 x 10-7 = [H+]

pH = -log[H+] = -log(1.54 x 10-7) = 6.81

Select all of the correct statements about reaction quotients and equilibrium constants from the choices below. A reaction quotient equals the equilibrium constant at equilibrium. K changes as temperature changes, but is independent of concentrations. If Q = K the reaction is already at equilibrium. A reaction quotient is the same as an equilibrium constant. The richer a reaction mixture is in product the higher its Q value is. As a reaction approaches equilibrium its Q value rises and its...

The average body temperature for healthy adults is 98.6 °F. Is this statement true? Do all healthy people have exactly the same body temperature? A study was conducted a few years go to examine this belief. The body temperatures of n = 130 healthy adults were measured (half male and half female). The average temperature from the sample was found to be x̄ = 98.249 with standard deviation s = 0.7332. Do these statistics contradict the belief that the average...
