If hikers and others were required to pay a fee to use the public trails, would the use of this common resource be more efficient? Why do you think we don’t see more market solutions to the tragedy of the commons?
No, it is not a efficient way to use the common resource if hikers and others were required to pay a fee to use the public trails because the common resources are rights of all the individuals and it should be checked that the public common resources are used properly for the benefits of the human-kind and miss-users are caught under “Tragedy of the Commons”.
Under the “Tragedy of the Commons”, the individuals use to share the common resource system with total behavior towards the better use for their own interest, thus collectively sharing the common resources for common good. The "Tragedy of the Commons" has a policy of common growth with economic and environmental growth through the use of common resources. The common resource can be miss-used or overused which should be checked, so that resources do not collapse.
The other solutions to have effective “Tragedy of the Commons” are rationing of the common resources, vigilance in the use of the common resources and authority control over the common resources.
Thus, charging fees to use the public resources is not the only solution to implementation of the “Tragedy of the Commons”.
