CMIS 320 Project 1
Write a justification paper, of at least 2 pages, to your boss
explaining how a relational database solution can be applied to a
current business problem or area for improvement. Assume that your
boss knows nothing about relational database theory. The goal of
this paper is to obtain your boss's approval to proceed with your
stated project. Do not focus on technical aspects of a database
management system. Focus on how the information will be captured,
manipulated, managed, and shared, and the value the database brings
to the organization. Include brief examples of how other industries
(both domestic and international) have successfully used relational
databases to increase efficiency.
Re: Importance of relational database solution for current business problem or area for improvement.
Dear Jason,
As you are very well aware of, 'Information is blood flow of any business', Every business transaction happened in any department of organisation, is stored in database tables. A data in these database tables used as useful information at time of taking important decisions, If the data in the table is accurate and up to date then only, the decision taken would turn out to be fruitful. So for the benefit of our organisation in terms of increasing its profitability, I am suggesting useful and beneficial solution to manage our organisation data, which is, Relational Database Model, which is a database software that can be used to create, maintain, manage and use the database. A "relational database" is a database structured on the "relational" model. Where, Data are stored and presented in a tabular format, organized in rows and columns with one record per row.
in Brief, The relational model represents the database as a collection of relations. A relation is nothing but a table of values. Every row in the table represents a collection of related data values. These rows in the table denote a real-world entity or relationship
Using Relational Database, it is very convinient to access all inter departmental data within the organisation. The Main features of Relational database are,
Relational theory as applied On relational databases, is that all data is connected to each other, keyed to each piece. Further, the large amount of organisation's data is managed in organised manner and can accessed at the time of need. Our organisation has various departments like, Inventory, Finance, Sales and Marketing, Production, HR, IT and security and some others, If finance department requires urgent data of last month's volume of production and when shall be next order to placed of raw material, these data is available with Production department, then using Relation Database, a Manager of Finance can easily access required data in lesser amount of time. Likewise, Any department can access data of any other department.
There are many industries have implemented Relational Database Solution model, Banking and Finance industries, Textile industries, Oil and Petroleum industries, FMCG Companies and many more.
In Oil and Petroleum Industry, Petroleum data has been managed and analyzed using many different proprietary systems. These systems are typically built based on local terminology and business needs, and use different practices for identifying, gathering, transferring and interpreting information. A typical operating company may use dozens (or even hundreds) of database relational models. Each department is tuned to the needs of different segments of the company; production accounting, field operations, seismic exploration, reserves management and financial departments all store information about wells in their respective software applications. So, This will help the organisation to communicate effectively within the organisation to achieve one shared goal.
There are various Relational Database solution providers are serving in global market, top providers with their market share are, Oracle (48.8%), IBM (20.2%), Microsoft (17.0%), SAP including Sybase (4.6%), and Teradata (3.7%).
So, It will be good for our organization's growth if we also implement Relation Database Model in our organization.
