A Question of Ethics
You are enjoying your job as a summer intern in the IT department of a local company. At lunch yesterday, several people were discussing ethical issues. You learned that some of them belong to IT organizations that have ethical codes to guide members and set professional standards. For example, Ann, your supervisor, belongs to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), which has over 100,000 members from more than 100 countries and a website at acm.org. Ann said that the ACM code of ethics is important to her, and would definitely influence her views. On the other hand, Jack, a senior programmer, believes that his own personal standards would be sufficient to guide him if ethical questions were to arise.
Because you are excited about your career as an IT professional, you decide to visit ACM’s website to examine the code of ethics and make up your own mind. After you do so, would you tend to agree more with Ann or with Jack? Why?
After you do so, would you tend to agree more with Ann or with Jack?
I would most certainly agree with the code of ethics established by ACM (Association for Computing Machinery).
Why?
My personal ethics and standards that I hold are limited to the experiences that I've had in my life thus far. I may or may not have come across situations that pose an ethical dilemma. Therefore, my personal standards and beliefs may not be enough to take a decision on the ethical dilemma when the only affected party is not me but also the reputation of the organization I intern at.
The ethical codes and professional standards set by the company as such would have had a lot of thought and discussions go into it, in order to arrive at the best possible outcome. This may or may not have legal implications as well. Therefore it is best for all involved if I were to stick to the guideline and standards set by the company's own ethics code as long as I intern there.
My own principles and standards shall be my moral compass but the decision I take shall be in the interest of the company and the affected parties. If there arises a situation where my personal beliefs are totally on a different tangent when compared with the ethical standards of the company, I shall approach the members who are available to guide on ethical issues to sort them out.
