Hooks law

Abstract:

Hooks law which states that the amount of force required to compress or elongate a spring. I.e. the amount of external force applied on the spring ∝-( change in length of length ).

Here applied force is used produce deformation force in the spting. Se , we can study elastic properties of materials using hook's law.

This law gives relationship between deforming force and amount the  spring stretches.

Introduction:

  • Elasticity is the property of the material with which a body regains its original shape and size when we remove deformation force.
  • Fir example: A rubber when external force is applied a deformation force is devolved in the spring which causes change in the configuration of the body. When we remove external force because of restoring force body regain its original configuration.
  • Hook's law is a law of elasticity discovered by English scientist Robert hooke in 1660, whivh states a small deformation force causes change in the size of the body.
  • I.e when we remove deformation force ( applied load) body regains its original shape.
  • Mathematically F= -kx
  • Here k proportional constant. Whose value is different for different material and it also depends on the dimensions and shapes of the body.
  • Hooks is also expressed in terms of stress and strain. I.e. within the elastic limit stress  ∝ strain
  • Stress = E strain
  • Here E is called coefficient of elasticity E = stress/ strain

Tools:

Tools required :

A stand with clips, spring , weights hanger, vernier calipers, different weights.

Conclusion: Using above tools spring constant can be folund out.

Using a graph on x axis weights added on y axis elongation in the spring. So slope = F/x = K

Force constant of the spring.
