Use the following information to answer the question. The phylum Cycliophora was discovered in 1995. They are tiny organisms that live in large numbers on the outsides of the mouthparts and appendages of lobsters. The feeding stage permanently attaches to the lobster via an adhesive disk and collects scraps of food from its host's feeding by capturing the scraps in a current created by a ring of cilia. The body is saclike and has a U-shaped intestine that brings the an,,,us close to the mouth. Cycliophorans are coelomates, do not molt (though their host does), and their embryos undergo spiral cleavage. Which of these, if discovered among cycliophorans, would cause the most confusion concerning our current understanding of cycliophoran taxonomy?
if the organisms show little apparent cephalization |
||
if embryos are diploblastic |
||
if the ciliated feeding ring is a lophophore |
||
if the body cavity is actually a pseudocoelom |
The Cycliophora are a new phylam, based on a single genus Symbion.diploblastic means an animal with a body wall composed only of two layers, ectoderm and endoderm, sometimes with a noncellular mesoglea between them.if the embryos are diploblastic if the ciliated feeding is lophophore and if the body cavity is actually pseudocelom .
One the other hand , The cycliophorans are the rgroup of microscopic marine animals with an asexual and sexual life cycle. The only described species Symbion pandora lives on the mouth appendages of marine lobsters and have so far only been found in the Northern hemisphere. The phylogenetic position in the Animal Kingdom is still uncertain. Cycliophorans have been considered a sister group to Entoprocta and Ectoprocta or Rotifera and Acanthocephala.
Cycliophora was originally allied to the Entoprocta and Ectoprocta (Bryozoa) based on ultrastructual research. Subsequent molecular data show they may be related to Rotifera and Acanthocephala, within the taxon Gnathifera. The phylogenetic position of Cycliophora is therefore not settled.
