Critical Thinking of Current Affairs
Collapse
Select a major current national or international news event. Apply your sociological imagination and your critical thinking skills, using the six rules of critical thinking described in Chapter 1, to explain the event. Thoroughly discuss several reasons why this event is occurring (or had occurred). In your response, be sure to demonstrate your ability to become a "critical consumer" of this information by looking beyond common sense and critiquing the information available to you.
Paterson shooting incident that took place in New Jersey is the one that happened just a few days ago. In this incident, 4 were shot dead and 3 got injured. Mayor's description regarding this incident was a gang fight that happened between a group of people who were prisoners and who were released from jail very recently. The news at a glance might not grab our attention as the people involved were all criminals with no innocent people involved. However, the issue with this is that despite being in prison for a long time, these people when released managed to live a life much worse than before they were in jail. A prison is a place where one is expected to understand his mistakes and take a turn in life trajectory as to live a peaceful life once released. A detailed investigation here needs to be seen on the exact person who has committed the crime, his background, and the reason for the same. The reason behind this investigation is to find those people who have taken the law into their hands and to prevent any further damage to other people if the gunman is allowed to live freely in society. My bias for this case is that no crime should be neglected and action must be taken against the accused irrespective of the type of people involved in crime. Usually it is seen that due to heavy number of cases handled by the police department, such cases would be neglected considering it as a fight between criminal gangs who deserve to die.
