Critical Thinking of Current Affairs
Collapse
Select a major current national or international news event. Apply your sociological imagination and your critical thinking skills, using the six rules of critical thinking described in Chapter 1, to explain the event. Thoroughly discuss several reasons why this event is occurring (or had occurred). In your response, be sure to demonstrate your ability to become a "critical consumer" of this information by looking beyond common sense and critiquing the information available to you.
One of the most important international events that people talk about today is terrorism that keeps most of the countries on their toes because they had to spend more time, money and resources in order to fight and tackle terrorism. One of the most important reasons for terrorism is religion because most of the terrorist attacks in the world today is the result of the inability of people to comprehend their own religious texts. Fundamentalists in almost all the religions boasts of their own religion as superior and try to degrade the other religions and people belong to them thus, lack sense to diversity and multiculturalism. Second reason for terrorism is the oppression of the other countries by the developed countries in terms of economy and military. Those who feel that they were dominated and looted by the developed countries try to retaliate them in the name of religion. This could be because of their own inadequacy to create a better life for themselves in their own country. Blaming others and causing damage provides them some kind of satisfaction while they do not understand that they cause damage to thousands of innocent people. It’s a prime time that all the countries come together in fighting the terrorists because common people live under constant fear because they may not be able to differentiate between an ordinary person and a terrorist. Thus, their day today activities would be affected and their individual rights in the society would be limited if there is a continuous threat.
