Dokoupil (“Is the onslaught making us crazy?”) asserts, that the Internet “encourages—and even promotes—insanity”. Provide evidence from his article that supports this contention. As a product (or victim!) of this technology, how do you personally relate to the findings? How does this relate to information in our textbook?
In addition to addressing the above, please feel free to note what struck you most in the readings and/or text re: mental illness. It’s a fascinating, important topic!
As always: Integrate applicable material/chapter, explicitly.
Internet cna have both good and bad effects on the individuals . When it comes to encouraging and promoting insanity, the internet plays a vital role . We can understand the effect of the internet on people's mindset through various examples .Let us first take the example of the Plank challenge which led to a number of deaths because of insane plank challenges . These challenges go viral because of the large audience reach of the internet and people develop a mindset that doing things make them cool on the internet . It also created social pressure on individuals which leads them to do insane tasks or things .One more example was the Kiki challenge which went viral .This was also a potentially dangerous challenge in which individuals were getting out of the cars listening to the kiki song. It led to many accidents and injuries .Though it was a fun challenge but it was against the road traffic rules. The Internet is full of content which can fuel racial and communal tension.Nowadays the internet is used as a tool to spread hate .This can be seen from the racist and communal posts which are shared on the internet . Sometimes things on the internet are very disturbing like the animal abuse videos or posts which hurt the sentiments of the people. In my opinion this needs to be monitored and filtered according to community guidelines which will help to reduce the spread of hatred and other problems that are propagated through the internet .
