this is fluid mechanics question

a)sketch performance curve of a pump on a head against volumetric flow rate axis

b) label shutoff and delivery points.

c) on the same axis sketch a system curve and label operating point.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:

The performace curve of the pump between head and volumetric flow rate is graphed as given below and all the points are marked as asked in point b and c.

Explaination of each point with meaning is also given below for easy understanding

Performace curve:

The performace curve of the pump tells about how a pump performs with regard to pressure head and volume flow rate. It shows the relation between volume flow rate and pressure difference and head.

Shutoff point

The point at which the pump developed the maximum head at zero flow rate is called as shutoff point. Or also known as shutoff head. The pressure corresponding to the shutoff point is called the shutoff pressure

Delivery point

Delivery head or point is measured by discharge minus the inlet pressure which is applied

Operating point

PUmp operating point is the point which is obtained at the intersection of pump performance curve and pump system curve. This is the operating point for any pump means pump will always work at this point

A centrifugal pump lifts water against a head of 36m, the manometric efficiency being 80%. The suction and delivery pipes are both 150mm bore, the impeller is of 375mm and 25mm wide at the outlet; its exit blade angle is 250 and the specific rotational speed is 1320 rev/min. If the total loss by friction in the pipeline at this speed is estimated at 9m, calculate the probable rate of discharge at this speed.

Question 4 An interesting topic in fluid mechanics is Bernoulli's equation, which relates pressures and velocities of a fluid with the density of rho at different heights, eq. 13.12. It has applications in the airspace. It can be used to measure flow speed in a pipe with a device named the Venturi meter (see figure 13.34). If the cross sections are 21 cm2 and 13 cm2, and the height difference resulted from the pressure difference is 0.2 m, calculate the...
