You prepare a schedule of your physical exercises for the next fortnight (14 days). You don’t do physical exercise more than once a day. If you have 10 PE sessions planned, explain using the counting principles covered in class how this means you will do PE on consecutive days at least once in the next fortnight.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Counting principles refers to finding ways in which an event can be completed by using a probability mechanism. These counting principles define how a problem can be solved.

In this problem we are given:

  • To prepare a schedule of physical exercises for 14 days.
  • One cannot do physical exercise more than once a day.
  • One has 10 PE sessions already planned.
  • One has to do physical exercise daily for the next 14 days atleast once a day.

Following these rules given we can divide sessions in multiple number of days. For example a single session of PE can comprise of multiple days but we do PE only once a day. So keeping these association in mind how many ways can we divide 14 days into 10 sessions. Let's see.

  • If one keeps 1 session of 5 days and other 9 sessions of 1 day then - 5 + 9 = 14 days.
  • If one keeps 2 session of 3 days and 8 sessions of 1 day then - 6 + 8 = 14 days.
  • If one keeps 4 sessions of 2 days and 6 sessions of 1 day then - 8 + 6 = 14 days

So there are three ways in 10 sessions can be divided into 14 days using the counting principles.
