A plane flying at 600 km / h to the north is held by a wind blowing 50 km / h from the north-east direction. What should the speed and direction of the plane be in order to go in the same direction (north)?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution approach:-
1. Draw a diagram with velocity of plane and velocity of air. (with direction).
2. Take component of air velocity in East and South directions.
3. Now assume velocity of air has two components (North and East).
4. Balance East direction component of plane with the West direction component of air.
5. Determine North direction component of plane using the fact that velocity of plane in North should be 600. In other words, Velocity of plane in North - Velocity of air in South = 600
6. By using point 4 and 5, both component of velocity of plane can be calculated. Using both components, we can determine direction and magnitude.
