As per-capita income levels of a country rise, women tend to have lower fertility rates. Why?
As per capita income rises, women tend to have lower fertility rates. There is an inverse relationship between the income of the individual and fertility. Higher the income, lower the fertility rate amd vice versa. This is mainly due to:
Opportunity cost: if people are earning higher incomes the opportunity cost will be higher of childbirth and the time given to parenting rather than given to their careers.
Economic Sustainability: if a women can economically sustain herself, then she is less likely to get married.
Quality: some people believe in quality over quantity and think that spending more resources on per child is better than spending less resources per child. So they are less likely to have more children.
Other factors: there are other factors such as thought process of an individual, religion etc which can affect the no. Of children one has.
