Using Minitab, perform a brief study similar to the one conducted in Lecture using the exponential distribution. Generate 32 columns of samples from an exponential distribution with mean 100 with at least 500 samples. Use row statistics to construct averages from 4, 8, 16, and 32 columns. Do any of the sample sizes (4, 8, 16, or 32) appear to approximate a normal distribution? Your evaluation of normality is subjective, so provide evidence to support your conclusion.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Path for random number generation from exponential distribution

calc--> Random Data----> Exponential---> Number of rows of data to generated (500)--> Store in column (C1-C32)---> scale(100)-->ok

the quantities in bracket indicate the input for desired output

we get 32 columns of random numbers from exponential distribution with mean 100

Now to find row statistics for column 4,8,16,32 respectively

calc--> Row statistics --> tick for mean--> Input variables(C4)--> Stors result in(C33)-->ok

similarly do for other three columns

Then for testing normality we draw histogram of each row statistics

Graph--> Histogram--> simple--> ok--> Graph variable (C33)--> ok

the output of the graph for columns 4,8,16,32 respectively as follow

The graph shows distribution is not normal for sample size 500

The graph shows distribution is not normal for sample size 500

The graph shows distribution is not normal for sample size 500

The graph shows distribution is not normal for sample size 500

Does daily cardio exercise make subjects perform better on tests of intelligence? A study was conducted in which the daily habits of 45 college students were documented, focusing on the number of hours spent on exercise in a week. After a week, the subjects were given a computer-based intelligence test on which they receive a score on a 0 to 100 point scale. Their scores were compared with how many hours they spent exercising that week. Select one or more:...

A study was conducted on pregnant women and the subsequent development of their children. One of the questions of interest was whether the IQ of children would differ for mothers who smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day during pregnancy and those who did not smoke at all. The mean IQ at age 4 for the children of the 66 nonsmokers was 113.04 points, while for the children of the 47 smokers, it was 103.17 points. The standard deviations were...

Albert Bandura has conducted a number of studies on aggression in children. In one study, one group of nursery school children were shown a film of adults punching, hitting (with a hammer), kicking, and throwing a large rubber Bobo doll. Another group was not shown the film. Afterward, both groups were allowed to play with Bobo dolls in a playroom, and the number of violent contacts were measured in each child. Let us imagine that we replicated this study and...
