For how long does a patient with hypothyroidism will take thyroid replacement therapy. Explain the rationale for your answer.
150 words. please include the link or reference of the answer. Thanks
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid does not produce enough hormones. Taking synthetic standard treatment for hypothyroidism is taking synthetic T4 hormone. When T4 hormones come into contact with other cells in the bloodstream, it becomes T3 ( by giving up an iodine atom). T3 and T4 are in charge of how body uses energy.
Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is an individualized treatment process, and works to normalize the levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Synthetic forms of the thyroid hormone T4 are generally called levothyroxine
The medication used to treat hypothyroidism is long acting, so in the beginning, it may take weeks symptoms improve. But symptoms should start disappearing within a month. Doctor likely monitors thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels after two or three months (as soon as four weeks in some cases). Hormone replacement therapy is usually a lifelong treatment, with TSH levels being tested periodically to adjust dosage, if needed.
Continued regular use of the medication is essential, even when thyroid hormone levels are restored This is because underactive thyroid cannot produce thyroxine (hormone) in adequate amounts. Therefore, hormone needs to be given constantly to the body as otherwise lower levels of T3 and T4 will lead to slower metabolism/metabolic rate and consequent decreased energy. In case medicine is stopped, symptoms such as lethargy, coldness, and weight gain are sure to return.
