Introduction
In this section you should introduce your scenario and
data set. Provide a brief overview of the scenario you are given
above and the data set that you will be analyzing. Classify the
variables in your data set. Which variables are
quantitative/qualitative? Which variables are discrete/continuous?
Describe the level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval,
ratio) for each variable included in your data set.
2. Data Visualization
Here you want to talk about the data's overall shape.
Is it skewed or symmetric? Are there any outliers? Is it unimodal?
Bimodal? Provide a histogram or box plot or another visualization
to justify your comments.
3. Summary Statistics
In this section you should first discuss the
importance of the Measures of Center and the Measures of Variation.
Explain each statistic so that a supervisor who doesn't know
statistics will understand what the numbers mean. What are the
measures of center and why are they important? What are the
measures of variation and why are they important?
Then you should calculate and present the following
sample statistics. Interpret these numbers in the context of the
selected topic:
Mean
Median
Mode
Range
Standard Deviation
4. Conclusion
In this section you should recap your ideas by
summarizing the information presented.
Be sure to present your work neatly and
professionally. This should be presentable to your boss as an
analyst's report. If you feel the need to include your data set (I
suggest you do not) you should put it in an appendix, not in the
body of your paper.
1. Classify the variables in your data set.
We are given with the data set of salaries according to the type of job category.
Which variables are quantitative/qualitative?
Quantitative variable is Salary and Qualitative variable is Job Title.
Which variables are discrete/continuous?
A discrete variable refers to a variable which assumes a finite number of isolated values, and variable salary has a finite value. So, we can say that Salary is a discrete variable.
Describe the level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) for each variable included in your data set.
Level of measurement for a Job title is nominal since it contains non-numeric values and Level of measurement for Salary is Interval since salaries have a range of data.
2. Let us visualize the data with the help of a histogram and a box plot:
Is it skewed or symmetric?
From the histogram, we can clearly say that the data is skewed.
Are there any outliers?
Yes, there are outliers in the data. Boxplot is showing the outliers after 1,00,000.
Is it unimodal? Bimodal?
The data has no mode present in it.
Comments:
We can say that the average salary is around 62,000.
3. What are the measures of center and why are they important?
Measures of center help in summarizing the data set. They are essential in telling the descriptive statistics of the data.
There are three necessary measures of central tendency commonly used to summarize a set of data: mean, median, and mode. The mean is the average of all the values. The median is the number that falls in the exact center of all the measurements. The third measure of central tendency is the mode of the data set or the number that occurs most frequently.
What are the measures of variation, and why are they important?
In addition to finding the mean, median, or mode of a data set, we can get to know how to measure spread out of the data as well. There are several ways to measure a variability or the amount of spread in a set of data.
The range tells us the difference between the highest and lowest values in a data set.
Standard deviation measures how far each one of the measurements is from the mean.
Descriptive statistics for the sample data is calculated with the help of Excel.
Go to Megastat> Descriptive Statistics. Select the input data and click on Mean, Median, Mode, Range, and Standard Deviation. Click OK to get the output as follows:
Salary | |
count | 364 |
mean | 62,074.0465 |
median | 57,643.6150 |
mode | #N/A |
minimum | 44397.4 |
maximum | 106147.79 |
range | 61750.39 |
sample standard deviation | 14,751.3835 |
4.
It is wise to say that the salary for Medical Equipment Repairers should be increased to help them to take the lead in the economy.
