Article studied - Police Brutality,Miscoduct and Shooting, New York Times (2018)
•Area of Intetest- Criminal Psychology.
•Research Topic- Police treatment of black community has raised a number of concern since past few years. The shooting and manslaughtering of Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown etc, by the white police forces has raised concerned in America. Black Americans are much more likely to be treated unfairly due to the racial segregation and stereotypes against them. Incidents of police brutality and on polarity of handling a black man and a white man (both commiting the same offence ) have been critiqued by the minority group.
•Research Question - The research question would analyse the disparity ( if, at all exist) in the treatment and detainment of offender from black community. The following questions would be studied.
•The disparity in the treatment of suspects from the black and
the white community?
•Is there a racial profiling while addressing and solving a
problem, as narrated by a white individual and an individual from
the black community?
•What psychological effect it has had on the black community due to
being exposed to racial profiling?
•Research Design- Qualitative method would be used to study the variables in the research question. A detailed narrative of the victim's(both black and white) family, friends and bystanders would be recorded to understand the correlation between the two variable (police brutality and black community). Public records from the media and the police station records would be used to understand the statistics of number of incarceration of the white and black people in the demographic area. Also, open ended interview would be conducted with the black community members who have experience racism from the police and legal department first hand. The data collected would be analysed to study police brutality and racial profiling of the black community , and the psychological effects it has had on them.
•Goal of the research - I would like to discover whether if there is police brutality and racial profiling of black community by the police forces. If it is present, what psychological effects it has had on the victim and how can existing penal policies eradicate the abuse of power which is being displayed by the police forces in America.
