Please use this scenario to answer the following question. If I present someone a yellow balloon, the person will be happy. During conditioning, every time I present them a balloon I pop the balloon, the person now flinches . Now every time I present the balloon (no popping) the person is scared. What is the conditioned response?
a. |
yellow balloon |
|
b. |
happiness |
|
c. |
loud popping |
|
d. |
scared |
Answer - d. Scared
Yellow balloon(stimulus) = happiness(response)
Yellow balloon + loud popping = Flinching
Yellow balloon = Flinching (scared)
The yellow balloon is an unconditioned stimulus (unconditioned stimulus is the stimulus that elicits a natural response) that evokes happiness (natural response or unconditioned response) in that particular person.
During conditioning - The yellow balloon is associated with loud popping. The natural reaction in response to this loud popping is flinching (scared).
The conditioned response to the yellow balloon is flinching or scared due to the repeated association between yellow balloon and flinching.
Note - Before conditioning - Yellow balloon was the unconditioned stimulus and happiness was the unconditioned response.
During conditioning - Loud popping is the unconditioned stimulus and 'flinching' (scared) is the unconditioned response.
Yellow balloon is the neutral stimulus.
Association between yellow balloon (neutral stimulus) and loud popping (unconditioned stimulus) takes place.
After conditioning - Yellow balloon is the conditioned stimulus and 'flinching or scared' is the conditioned response
