So, who appeals to you more Plato or Aristotle? Why ? What part of each man's thought appeals to you? Who do you see as being more influential historically and in what way? (Both are- but what jumped out as you as you read and you said, "Wow! I never knew that was Plato / Aristotle!)
So, who appeals to you more Plato or Aristotle? Why ?
Aristotle appeals to me more. Reason: Aristotle's views were more scientific and descriptive.
What part of each man's thought appeals to you?
Plato had a larger propensity towards metaphysical solutions. He played a vital role in encouraging the Greek intelligentsia to regard science as a theory. His Academy taught arithmetic as part of philosophy. This appeals to me.
Aristotle developed the scientific method. And this appeals to me. Even reading Aristotle's The Art of Poetry or Ethics, his writing seems to me far more convincing as he generally 1. States a proposition, 2. Justifies the reasoning and then 3. Concludes.
Who do you see as being more influential historically and in what way?
I see Aristotle as more influential historically. He is a towering figure in ancient Greek philosophy, who made important contributions to logic, criticism, rhetoric, physics, biology, psychology, mathematics, metaphysics, ethics, and politics. He was a student of Plato for twenty years but is famous for rejecting Plato's theory of forms.
