What are today’s primary ways through which machine learning tasks are tackled?

  1. Machines which will work with and exploit a given set of rules to maneuver towards the specified outcome.
  2. Machines that may, unsupervised, study data to search out patterns, improving with experience (though never autonomous).
  3. Machines may extrapolate from a general pattern and apply it to other data.
  4. Machines that require to be taught by example before they will apply the resulting insight to similar tasks.

Explain the concept of “deep learning” and how it differs from machine learning.

The field of artificial intelligence is essentially when machines can do tasks that typically require human intelligence. It encompasses machine learning, where machines can learn by experience and acquire skills without human involvement. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning where artificial neural networks, algorithms inspired by the human brain, learn from large amounts of data. Similarly to how we learn from experience, the deep learning algorithm would perform a task repeatedly, each time tweaking it a little to improve the outcome. We refer to ‘deep learning’ because the neural networks have various (deep) layers that enable learning. Just about any problem that requires “thought” to figure out is a problem deep learning can learn to solve.

Difference:

  1. Machine learning uses algorithms to parse data, learn from that data, and make informed decisions based on what it has learned.
  2. Deep learning structures algorithms in layers to create an "artificial neural network” that can learn and make intelligent decisions on its own.
  3. Deep learning is a subfield of machine learning. While both fall under the broad category of artificial intelligence, deep learning is what powers the most human-like artificial intelligence.

How are organizations using deep learning to help make business decisions?

One key area where artificial intelligence and machine learning can create value in companies today is the acceleration of the decision-making process. Today's machine learning technologies can analyze vast data sets faster and more accurately thanks to:

  • A greater volume and variety of data
  • More affordable data storage solutions
  • Greater computational processing power

A great example of deep learning is Google’s AlphaGo. Google created a computer program with its own neural network that learned to play the abstract board game called Go, which is known for requiring sharp intellect and intuition. By playing against professional Go players, AlphaGo’s deep learning model learned how to play at a level never seen before in artificial intelligence, and did without being told when it should make a specific move (as a standard machine learning model would require). It caused quite a stir when AlphaGo defeated multiple world-renowned “masters” of the game—not only could a machine grasp the complex techniques and abstract aspects of the game, it was becoming one of the greatest players of it as well.
