Describe 2-3 ways that cognitive psychology will contribute to your personal and/or professional development.
Cognitive psychology is a scientific study of the mind which includes language, attention, memory, thinking, perception and consciousness.
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is based on cognitive psychology. The goal of CBT is to help individuals change their thought patterns that affect their behavior negatively. By effectively teaching individuals to change their thinking patterns from negative to positive emotions, one can have an optimistic outlook and thus improve one’s mental health. For students, learning and memory can be improved by using certain techniques explained in cognitive psychology such as chunking and grouping method. Here one is taught to learn by grouping information meaningfully. One can also assess their learning styles and identify the one that is most beneficial for each individual. Thus cognitive psychology has practical application in the educational setting as understanding mental processes is beneficial while developing the curriculum which will enhance learning.
