Answer: BPG is a highly anionic compound found in hemoglobin (efficient oxygen transporter). Also it is an allosteric inhibitor of Hb, decreases hemoglobin's affinity for oxygen, . The concentration of BPG is the same in adult and fetal RBC, but BPG binds more tightly to adult Hb than to fetal Hb and facilitates the transfer of O2 to the fetus due to the following:

  • The fetal oxygen-dissociation curve is to the left of the maternal oxygen-dissociation curve, thereby increasing the respiration rates (in order to survive ). By the time the blood reaches the placenta there is a lower concentration of oxygen in the blood, the fetal hb has a higher affinity for oxygen than maternal red blood cells because fetal Hb does not bind BPG, so that the hb can bind to oxygen at the lower partial pressures of oxygen in the mothers blood. Also fetal Hb binds to oxygen more strongly than adult Hb and this enables the transfer of oxygen from mother to fetus prenatally. Oxygen exchange within the tissue is affected by the strength of the binding between hemoglobin and oxygen.
