What kind of network management protocols are available? What information can these protocols provide? Explain it with example.
The network management protocols are:
1. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
SNMP is the foremost standard protocol, which queries relevant objects in a bid to extract data from devices such as switches, WLAN controllers, servers, printers, routers, modems, etc., which have been attached to a network.
2. Internet Control Message Point (ICMP)
ICMP is a network monitoring protocol specially designed for error reporting. Network devices such as routers make use of ICMP to send error messages at situations where for example a host/client can’t be reached or requested information is not available.
3. Cisco Discovery Protocol
CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) is a Data Link Layer network monitoring protocol specially designed by Cisco systems for sharing information between connected Cisco devices that have a direct link to each other.
The information these protocol provide:
Network management protocols are protocols designed to facilitate the tracking and provision of reports on data and traffic flowing to and from network links – between a host and client device. Collected data is processed and graphically displayed via GUI, so that network operators can use the information provided in managing the network’s activity.
