Oral glucose tolerance test is a screening test to diagnose Diabetes

The following has to be explained to Mary Wolf regarding

Consumption of food and fluid:

  • Continue to eat a normal diet in the days leading upto test
  • Consult the doctor if taking any medications (Corticosteroids,Beta Blockers, Anti depressant,Diuretics)
  • Do not eat for 8 to 14 hours before the test
  • No fluids are allowed during test or less than 8 to 14 hours
  • Avoid chewing gums

Water Consumption:

  • Do not drink water during or less than 8 hours of testing
  • If needed sips of water is allowed

Smoking:

  • Do not smoke because it leads to impaired blood glucose levels, impaires insulin sensitivity
  • smoking raises blood sugar level

Leaving the test site

  • The interval and the number of samples depend upon the purpose of the test
  • Normally it takes 2 hours ( 0 hour sample and after 2 hour sample)
  • It may exceed upto 6 hours depending upon the requirement

Activity:

  • The daily activity or normal activities can be done after the test
  • Resume excercise after the test
