To find the height of an overhead power line, you throw a ball straight upward. The ball passes the line on the way up after 0.85 s , and passes it again on the way down 1.5 s after it was tossed.

a) What is the height of the power line?

b) What is the initial speed of the ball?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given that the ball passes the power line at 0.85s and 1.5s after it was tossed.

That means the ball reached its max height in the middle of that time period.

Time Period = 1.5s - 0.85s = 0.65s

Middle of the time period = 0.65s/2 =0.325s

------------

The ball reached its max height at ( 0.85s + 0.325s) 1.175s after it was tossed

-----------

Consider the ball going up

Use formula

At max height velocity becomes zero.

The ball is going up and g is acting downwards ,so put negative sign.

If I throw a ball straight up, it deflects slightly to the west due to Coriolis forces. If instead I watch a bubble float up in water, is the bubble deflected west, east, or neither? I think the bubble also moves west, but am not sure. My reasoning is that the air in the bubble must feel a Coriolis force to the west because it is rising. Further, as the bubble rises, the water around it moves, and the net...
