Expert Solution

1)

The considerations for making a decision between pursuing a global strategy and a multi-domestic strategy are as follows:

  • Standardized products- If the products are standardized then a global strategy should be pursued. For example, if the product is footwear, there would be no changes required in the product in different countries. So, a global strategy should be pursued.
  • Customized products- If the products are customized for different countries, a multi-domestic strategy should be pursued. For example, if an organization produces food items, it would have different food items in different countries based on local tastes. Hence it would require to customize its products in different countries, and a multi-domestic strategy should be pursued. McDonald's offers a different menu in the US and in an Asian country like India, based on taste preferences in the country. So, McDonald's uses a multi-domestic strategy.
  • Critical market- If the country in which an organization wants to do business is a very large and critical market, the organization would want to have more concentrated efforts in that country. In such a case, a multi-domestic strategy should be pursued.
  • Rapidly growing market- If the country in which an organization wants to do business has a rapidly growing market where frequent changes or aggressive marketing efforts may be required, a multi-domestic strategy should be pursued.
  • Brand image- If an organization wants to expand its existing global brand image in a country, a global strategy should be pursued.

2)

Some situations where outsourcing is not wanted are:

  • If the cost of outsourcing is higher than getting the work done in-house.
  • If ample manpower and resources are available in an organization, it would be better to get the work done in-house.
  • If an organization wants more control over the processes, outsourcing would not be preferred.
  • Outsourcing may not be preferred, if the work involves handling of confidential data, trade secrets, etc
