Correctional population - Alcohol Addicts (Women)

It is important to classfify alcohol addiction such that there is no overlap with other types of drug addiction. Some times substance use or alcholics in remission can be confused with an individual who is under the influence. Therefore it is essential to make this discrimination. The Alcohol Dependence Scale, Ethanol Dependence Syndrome (EDS) Scale and Substance Dependence Severity Scale (SDSS) can be administered to make a diagnosis. Once this is done, comorbidity needs to be ruled out. Many times individuals with alcohol dependence may be suffering from depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. They are also living below poverty line and that leads ot many economic difficulties. After all this has been classified we would move the individual to a rehabilitation facility where she would attend deaddiction therapy sessions along with any other therapies (CBT etc.) if there is comorbidity.

It is important to have a good support sytem but many times addicts do not have one because their families do not understand that this is a mental/psychological issue and blame the addict. If supportive caregivers can be identified, that would be helpful for a faster recovery. Medication as prescribed by the psychiatrist will need to be administered. If the female has gone to prison, taking medication and going to an alcoholics support group will be benficial, along with visitation from family/friends. Recovery from alcohol dependency is a long and tedious process and needs a lot of time and commitment. Many times, individuals relapse and need to start again.
