Explain how horizontal and vertical center of mass position can influence mechanical stability?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Centre of mass or centre if gravity has a very keen role to play in matter of stability of any structure or item.

The lower the centre of mass the more stable the structure will be be cause it will have lesser value of torque to topple it as its distance from the base will be lesser. As well as in horizontal com is not symmetric than also its is very likely that the structure will generate the torque about some point and is very likely to topple.

If the area of the structre is larger on the lower side it confirms more stability to the system there are example every where of it.

Large building is always have more area on the lower side,

Centre of mass of sports cars are very low so that they can to go higher speed without intruption and so on.

Vetical com has to be near the base as close as possible for stability and horizontal com shoukd be in the middle with symmetric allignment.
