Q:-What is "just culture" in the health care setting?

Just culture is a process of explaining an individual his mistakes in order to improve the care, safety and service provided to the patinet in health care settings. Its a letning process and here we learn from our mistakes too.

Q:-Describe the reason why it is desirable to have just culture exist at a health care facility such as an acute care hospital?

People make errors and errors in health care settings can cause death. Life is important and humans are not machines so minimising errors is an important thing in health care and its good to have people around us to monitor and teach us.

Whether its an Acute care hospital or a multi speciality hospitals ,the patients are of upmost priority and we do work there with life's and its important to have a just culture to prevent lots of mistakes and morbidities and mortalities.

Once a person makes a mistake and can be punished but punishment itself will not solve the problem but if we teach them they will understand the concept and never repeats it once they understand. Most of the people covers their mistake by telling lies because they are affraid of scholdings and punishments ,but this environment is being changed by the just culture concept.

For example :- A junior resident was asked to conduct a test in a patient but the resident forgets to do that and reports a false report regarding patient to the senior consultant.

Here the resident must not be punished and punishment will not provide a solution here ,he must be explained clearly regarding the consequences of telling lies in the hospital that can even cause a loss of life. Inspite of shouting at him the right thing is to expain him about the importance of being truthful.

So this balance between blamelessness and punishment is the goal of just culture.

Its not in which setup we are working whether in Acute or a Multi speciality hospital we do handle life's we must not create mistakes and we must be bold enough to say don't know ,forgotten etc to save lives. Thus we need someone to observe us and to catch us and to correct us because life once gone is not returned and its better for us to keep learning that lossing a life .
