Nurse is responsible for care of the newborn immediately after birth and it is very much requried and very crucial. After birth there should be attention to the condition of the newborn up to 2-3 hours after birth. Detail of interventions including assessments, medications administered, bonding and safetey considerations which should be maintained by the nursing staff under the guidance of RN are as follows:
Nurse should dry the baby with warm towels or cloths, when he or she is being placed on the mother's abdomen or in her arms, becausethis mother-child skin-to-skin contact is very essential to maintain the baby's temperature, at the same time it encourages bonding between baby and mother and to expose the baby to the mother's skin bacteria.
Furthermore nurse should ensure that the airway of the baby is clear, after removing mucus and other material from the mouth, nose & throat with the help of a suction devices.
Moreover nurse should measure and maintain the body temperature of baby, to ensure that there is no any metabolic crisis related to the exposure of cold.
Then nurses should clamp and cutt the umbilical cord with sterile instruments/device, after ensuring it is quitely sterilized to avoidthe chances of infections.
Very early of the birth few drops of silver nitrate solution or an antibiotic is should be placed into the eyes of baby to prevent infection from any harmful organisms during delivery as maternal STDs
Similarlly vitamin K is also introduced to prevent haemorrhagic disorders of the newborn .
Nursing staff should advice to put the baby on the breast as early as possible to encourage early breast-feeding specifically within the first hour after birth.
Thus by considering these interventions the safety ofmother as well as new born is justified in a true sence and its the cire respoonsibilty of the nursing staff.
