What is the effect of the following on the volume of 1 mol of an ideal gas?

(a) The pressure from 760 torr to 202 kPa, and the temperature changes from 37C to 155k.

(b) The temperature changes from 305K to 32C, and the pressure changes from 2 atm to 101k Pa.

(c) The pressure is reduced by a factor of 4 ( at constant T).

Solutions

Expert Solution

a)

first convert the all pressure in to atm

760 torr = 1 arm

202 kp = 1.99358 atm we can consider as 2 atm

convert the temperature in to kelvins

273 + 37 = 310 k

another temperature is 155K

now if you observe this Pressure increased fron 1 atm to 2 atm,

temperature decreased from 310 to 155 K kelvin means half

ideal gas equation

PV = nRT

rearranhe the equation

V = nRT/P

from this it is clear that pressure and volume is inversily propotional

double the pressure half the volume that means volume reduced half

now volume and temperature is directly propotional

reduced the temperature half volume also will be half so here again volume decreased two times

so ovarall volume will decreqase four times

b)

again convert here also pressure in to atm and temperature in to K

32 ºC means 305 K, another also 305 means no change in temperature

101 k Pa = 1 atm

Pressure reduced from 2 at to 1 atm

that means volume will increase will increase double

c)

since pressure and volume is inversily propotional if pressure decreases four times volume will increase four times
