In a few days, we'll put Comp 1 behind us and move on to what's next: fall classes, current employment, plans for careers, and more. And you've got hopes and good intentions. In this thread, let us know what a couple of your goals are as you move on.

"SMART" goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. (I'll clarify these terms/descriptions in a "Note to All" post at the top of the discussion.) Try articulating your goals as SMART goals!

Expert Solution

  • I will start by saying that career goals are personal and require some self reflection.Thinking about where you want to see yourself in next 5 years and envisioning that is the first step in setting up SMART goals for your future career.
  • Once you’ve answered this honestly for yourself, think about what you can be doing now that sets you up for success to achieve those goals. Create objectives or milestones for yourself, and work towards these “short-term” successes to keep you on track to reach your goals.
  • For example,I decided and envisioned myself to lead a marketing team at a Fortune 500 company. Now I thought backwards to where I am now and what I would like to achieve along the way to this goal.
  • So I decided I need to develop a particular skill - create an objective to learn this skill either through a job or outside of work like communication skills and then measure it on success. (SMART goals).
  • Measurable goals can go a long way in refining what exactly it is that you want, too. Defining the physical manifestations of your goal or objective makes it clearer, and easier to reach. So,yes setting the specific goal of learning communiction skills so that I could get a marketing job motivated me to join communication course which became my benchmark to measure my performance.
  • My goal was definitely attainable to get a marketing job since apart from having the necessary qualifications I also worked on myself and made myself equipped for the job by interning and displaying my communication skills for the final permanent job I get.
  • My goal of becoming big in marketing field was absolutely was relevant to me since I always I had an interest and wanted to work in a huge MNC with a good pay check as well as challenge myself everyday at work and move forward in my career.I trained myself for it by interning, joing training workshops as I always knew this field is for me.
  • And finally, setting a time period for myself for almost a year before I became ready to achieve my final goal of getting a job in my favourite multinational.
  • SMART goals bring a clarity in your life and gives you a direction, when you break down your ultimate goal in small steps and achieve them step by step.It makes you more determined and focused and feeling a sense of achievement when you finally accomplish your goal.
