discuss the academic applications of memory models and try to apply the principles to yourself.
Using Baddeley’s working memory model, give an example of two tasks that could successfully be performed simultaneously (For example, can you listen to music while studying at the same time?). Discuss two other tasks that probably would interfere with each other. Make sure to discuss your answers in terms of the visuospatial scratchpad, the phonological loop, and the central executive.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Baddeley and Hitch (1974) developed the Working Memory Model (WMM), which focuses specifically on the workings of short-term memory (STM).The WMM provides an explanation for parallel processing (i.e. where processes involved in a cognitive task occur at once).
  • Baddeley and Hitch’s Working memory model proposed a central executive with a brief duration and capacity that controlled 2 subsidiary slave systems, the phonological loop and the visuo spatial sketchpad. The phonological loop also has brief duration and small capacity and is described as the inner ear or inner voice (articulatory control system) as it is used for internal repetition to aid memory and also encodes acoustically.
  • The visuo spatial scratch pad encodes visually (inner eye) and is used for visual or spatial tasks. It too has brief duration and a limited capacity. Baddeley stated that people could do a task with both the phono loop and visuo spatial sketchpad at the same time but not do two visual or verbal tasks at the same time.
  • For example,we can listen to music while driving, which we all do.Listening to music makes use of our hearing senses and driving is a visual task.
  • For example,of tasks which interfere with each other is reading and watching television,we cannot do both at the same time since our visual attention is needed on atleast one to understand it.
  • Also, speaking to two different people on different phones is not possible, since it is very likely to mix up the conversation and moreover not even comprehend completely what those two people are saying since you cannot hear them simultaneously. It is not possible.
  • Due to time limit, any remaining questions can be asked as another question, they will be answered, thankyou for your cooperation
