Data Governance

It is the practice of managing data assets throughout their lifecycle to ensure that they meet organizational quality and integrity standards.

In the healthcare industry, health information management professionals are often responsible for developing and overseeing data governance principles that improve the consistency, reliability, and usability of data assets while optimizing EHR interfaces to eliminate unnecessary or duplicate steps for end-users and eradicate problematic workarounds.

The goal of these activities is

  • to improve staff efficiency,
  • foster an environment of accountability, and
  • create a standardized, interoperable pool of big data that can be used for organizational improvements and higher quality clinical decision-making.

Data Quality

Weiskopf and Weng make this point exceptionally well in their paper Methods and Dimensions of Electronic Health Record Data Quality Assessment: Enabling Reuse for Clinical Research.

Data quality is the result of a series of factors ranging from specific architecture and design choices (e.g., schema, UI/data entry, validation methods) to semantic controls (e.g., terminologies, ontologies, standard data sets).

Data Quality focuses on four primary areas

  • data capture and validation
  • standard data sets and data set definitions
  • reviews and analyses of data inaccuracies in clinical systems
  • and methods for defining data quality.

Data Integrity

It is used to identify and track patients as they move from one level of care to another ensuring integrity of healthcare data as the providers use them in making decisions about patient care.

Documentation integrity involves the accuracy of the complete health record. It encompasses information governance, patient identification, authorship validation, amendments and record corrections as well as auditing the record for documentation validity when submitting reimbursement claims.

We see that data structures, collections, and abstract data types are closely related concepts. Objects that are contained within these entities are typically called items or elements. From the object-oriented perspective, data structures have both private data and public behaviors. The behaviors define data structures in an abstract, implementation independent manner. Other equivalent terms used for behaviors are operations, methods, public interface, and usage interface. In this discussion, we explore the primary behaviors needed to use data structures. - Remove...
