-The Blurring Boundaries Between Work and Home

One of the most interesting transformations taking place in the work place today is the rapid blurring of the boundaries between home and office. The following numbers, based on a survey of large companies that employ more than 500 employees, tell an interesting story.

¨             40 percent of large companies allow part-time telecommuting.

¨             16 percent of large companies offer child care centers, some even subsidized by the company.

¨             3 percent of large companies allow employees to bring their pets to work.

  1. Do these numbers surprise you?

  2. Why do you think companies permit such flexibility, even in an environment where unemployment is high?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. No, these numbers do not surprise me because in this modern world, keeping the employee satisfaction high is the key initiative being taken by most of the global organizations since these organizations feel that this will lead to better employee motivation and their productivity levels will increase which in turn will help the organization achieve it's goals, objectives, mission and vision values and also make it earn better revenue and profit levels.

2. Companies permit such flexibility even in an environment where unemployment is high because such kind of flexibility will help in retaining the employees and help in reducing attrition rate of the company. It is widely established that the employees are the greatest assets for any organization and the company must do whatever it can do to retain them in order to achieve organizational goals and objectives. A right mix of experience and fresh employees are required in a company who will guide the company to future growth and help in increasing the profit levels of the company.
