1. True or False: A polarized material must have a nonzero net electric charge.
2. Two identical conducting spheres are charged with a net charge of +5.0?+5.0q on the first sphere and a net charge of −8.0?−8.0q on the second sphere. The spheres are brought together, allowed to touch, and then separated. What is the net charge on each sphere now?
a−3.0?
b−1.5?
c+1.5?
d+3.0?
3. A solid cube carries a charge of +8?+8e. You measure the charge on each face of the cube and find that each face carries +0.5?+0.5e of charge. Is the cube made of conducting or insulating material? Explain.
a. The cube is made of insulating material because all the charges are on the surface of the cube.
b. The cube is made of conducting material because some of the charges are inside the cube.
c. The cube is made of insulating material because all the charges are on the surface of the cube.
d. The cube is made of insulating material because some of the charges are inside the cube.
Solution
1. FALSE.
The truth sentence can be written as, a polarizer material need not to have a net electric charge.
This is due to the fact that polarization is just the allignment of electric dipoles along a particular direction. A dipole means two equal and opposite charges separated by a distance. Thus the total charge of the dipole is zero and also net charge in a polarized material can be zero.
2. b. -1.5 micro Coulumb.
The total charge on the two spheres ,
When the spheres are brought in physical contact, this total charge get equally shared among both speheres hence the charge on each sphere will be,
3. d. The cube is made of insulating material because some of the charges are inside the cube.
Since we know cube has 6 sides and hence total charge on six sides of cube is, 6*0.5e=3e. Hence we can see the rest of the charge (8e-3e=5e) is carried inside the volume of cube. A cube made of metal(conducting material) will always carry the charges uniformly all over its sides. Hence we can say that the cube is made up of insulating material.
