QUESTION 10 For a chi-square goodness-of-fit test, what is the number of degrees of freedom, if the number of categories in the distribution is 9? what is the critical value for a 1% level of significance?
Solution:-
If the number of categories in the distribution is “n” then the degree of freedom for a chi-square goodness-of-fit test is “(n-1)”.
I.e As, the number of degrees of freedom is df = (number of categories – 1).
Hence,
The degree of freedom for a Chi-square goodness-of-fit test for 9 categories in the distribution is = (9-1) = 8.
Now,
Critical value of Chi-square at 1% level of significance and with 8 degree of freedom is = 20.09.
