Discuss the distinct issues facing imprisoned mothers and their children. Why are these issues important? Describe the types of programming that exist for imprisoned mothers. Discuss problems and issues associated with such programming.
Following are the issues faced by imprisoned mothers and their children:
1.Poor health care facilities
2.Sexual abuse.
3.Seperation from children and family:seperation is a major issue especially in cases where imprisoned mother is sole carer of the their children, this can lead to loss of family safety and stability,stigma and other stess factors.
3.pregnat women are are precluded from participating in education,training or work programmes as there is no childcare facilities in the prison.
4.societies attitude towards women crminals may sometime lead to harsher sentences than men who would not be imprisoned for the same.
5This has a lasting effect on their child's development and wellbeing.Their likelihood of experiencing risks including mental helath issue,behavioural problems, substance anuse,school faiure etc. increases.
Programmes that exist for imprisoned mothers:
1.Camp programmes: These programes offers counselling and other activities to facilitate relationship building.
2.Nursery programs: this allows the mothers to have their children from birth to 12-24 months old. they share a special room with their child. parenting classes are also conducted within this programe.
3.Community collaborative programs and services: it includes variety of programs and services. some satates ofers lkiteracy programs while others include parent/teacher conferences via video confrencing.The staff Volunteers theses program which makes igt morre successfull.
4.Child visitation programs:The department offers a child friendly visitation opportunities for mothers and children which alows them to meet in outdoor yard areas .
