Performing a Subcutaneous Injection

1.Subcutaneous injection is the administration of drug through subcutaneous route.
Procedure:
Before the procedure wash hands as per technique, prepare the site with alcohol and allow to dry, don gloves(clean glove).
Articles needed:
Clean tray,
Medication sheet as per doctor order
Medicine
Syringe gauges 25/27.
Cotton balls
Alcohol swab
* Technique:
The main sites are upper outer arm,
Front and outer surface of thigh
Upper and outer buttocks
Upper hip
First the alcohol swab should apply on the site and let it dry. Grasp skin with your hand. Insert the needle by holding syringe barrel. When the needle downs insert the medication. Pull out the needle and gently wipe the area and covered with gauze pad. Wait there check for any allergy or bleeding from tge site.
The main drugs are giving through subcutaneous site are heparin and insulin.
2.Documentation is very important either in paper or electronic system. After administration remove and clean used articles. Then we have to document properly. The documentation contains proper date and time of administration, dose order by physician, dose administered, frequency. Route of medicine. Also document the condition of the patient before and after the procedure. Make sure that patient is not getting any allergic reaction due to sideeffect of drug. The nurse should enter and put signature in medication chart also.
