Convincing Others that Climate Change is Real

Climate change remains a somewhat controversial topic in the media and in politics, while nearly every climate scientist is in agreement about what is happening right now. If there is so much data, why are there still so many critics of climate change? Search the internet for one argument that either climate change is not happening at all, or that humans are not largely responsible for what is happening. Choose an argument that has not been posted by your classmates in the discussion. Clearly state the argument in one sentence at the top of your post and make it bold so your classmates can find it easily. Below that, describe the reasons for the argument against climate change, using credible sources (and, better yet, scholarly ones). Below that, make an argument to the contrary, i.e., that climate change is real and that humans are responsible for it. Write this as if you were writing to the critic of climate change trying to change his or her their mind. What approach would you take?

Ans.

The biggest critique of climate change in the current times is US President Donald Trump who is among a few anti environmentalists. He believes that there is nothing like climate change and the earth has capacity to absorb all such effects of climate change which has had occurred in the past many times and hence it is not a new phenomenon. Thus, we need to focus on development instead of climate change. Inspite of availability of data, they do not believe it is actually happening, because they deliberately do not want to accept it and they think that it is normal phenomenon that occurs after a period of time again and again and hence our priority should be the development and not the climate change.

His quotes supporting this are -

"I don't think it is a hoax but I think there must be a difference. But I am not sure, whether it is manmade or not" - D. Trump

"New York is freezing, where is global warming?"

According to reports, only 1% scientists believe that there is nothing like global warming and they think so because the Earth has gone through many ice ages and warm interglacial periods in the past and hence earth has its own mechanism to recover. Thus it does not matter.

But IPCC report clearly mentioned that it is occurring due to anthropogenic factors because earth has experienced about .6 degree celsius increase in temperature in 20th century alone which has never been happened in the past.

To make them believe this, I will put some evidences of extreme climate events in front of them like Australian bush fire due to heat waves, cold waves in many parts of the world, heat waves in Europe, Climate refugees increasing in number, disappearance of Okjakull in Iceland etc which all represent that climate change is actually happening.

I hope the answer is clear to you, in case you have any query, please feel free to ask. If you are satisfied with the answer, please give a thumbs up. Your support is valuable. Thank You
