Write the balanced chemical equation for ethanol C2H6O burning in air as a LEAN mixture if the reactant side of the reaction is C2H6O + ?(O2 + 3.76N2) ===> ? CO2 + H2O + ? ?????

NOTE: A LEAN mixture means you have more air than you need to burn all the fuel. You will have excess oxygen left over after the reaction process.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer -

We are given the ethanol and it is burn in the air and ask for the complete the reaction of combustion reaction

C6H6O + (O2 + 3.76 N2)-----> CO2 + H2O + N2

C = 6                                         C = 6

H = 6                                         H = 2

O = 3                                           O = 3

N = 7.52                                     N = 2

C6H6O + 14/2 (O2 + 3.76 N2)-----> 6CO2 + 3H2O +26.32 N2

Now we need to multiply by 2

2 C6H6O + 14 (O2 + 3.76 N2)-----> 12 CO2 + 6 H2O +52.64 N2

So this is the balanced equation.
