A firework of mass 1kg is shot in the air. At the highest point of its trajectory the firework
has a velocity of 20m/s (horizontal) and explodes splitting into 2 parts, that fly off at 40° and 30°
relative to the initial trajectory (see diagram). Part 1 that moves off at 40° has twice the
magnitude of vertical velocity of part 2. Assume the total mass of the system doesn’t change,
and neglect any other possible forces on the objects.
a) Draw a detailed diagram of the situation labeling
properties and coordinates (5 points)
b) Use conservation of momentum in the vertical direction to
find the mass of each part after the explosion. (6 points)
c) Express the conservation of momentum in the horizontal
Find the speed of each part immediately after the explosion. (12 points)
d) Find the kinetic energy before the explosion. (3 points)
e) How much energy from the explosion turns into kinetic energy? (3 points)
f) what kind of a “collision” is this event, explain? (1 points)
