How should an organization treat its employees during a pandemic? – Discuss from both organization and employees’ perspectives.
In our discussion forums, we have discussed employees are the most valuable assets of an organization, even though they are not listed in the Balance Sheet. Without employees, an organization is nothing.

Here, I use the word “organization” instead of “company/firm” because I do not want to limit your thinking on certain well-structured companies/firms (e.g. listed firms), it can be any organizations, no matter big or small, private or listed, profit-oriented or public benefit organizations.

REQUIRED:

1. Explain the main reasons why employees are valuable assets, and why the organization should treat them well. [You could look for journal articles on what benefits employees can bring for the organization, and the Social Responsibilities of an organization towards employees.]

2. Describe what employees expect from the organization and why. [You could get some hints from why people decide (not) to change jobs or resign.]

3. Discuss how the pandemic affects the above two points. Compare what the organization can do and what employees need during a pandemic. [You could read news and organizations’ disclosures; you could discuss the experience from your family, friends, or someone your know.]

4. Provide your suggestions on how to help employees (including those who lost jobs) in Fiji go through the difficult time. [You could talk about anything that you think is helpful, no matter whether or not it is available in Fiji.]

TREATMENT OF EMPLOYEES DURING PANDEMIC

  • The organization must give priority to the health of the employees during the pandemic and their well being by arranging wellness program for the to know about how to protect them from the COVID -19
  • The organization must keep the communication too on their top priority list as two way communication really important.
  • They should take various steps to safeguard the employees by providing them PPE kits and arranging them with various sanitization methods during pandemic and give them sincere thanks.
  • Provide them flexibility to work either give work from or providing them flexible working hours.
  • They should be bother about the needs of the employees time to time.

REASONS WHY EMPLOYEES ARE CONSIDERED AS A VALUABLE ASSET FOR THE ORGANISATION AND WHY ORGANIZATION SHOULD TREAT THEM WELL

  • Employees give their 100% so that organization can achieve their goals whether the size of the organization is small or big they give their best .
  • Employees are the first customers the organization it is the duty of the organization to keep them happy and satisfied so that they can work efficiently and provide the organization success.
  • Employees are nurturers of the organization they give their heart and soul to the organization like parent give to their children. they nurture organization with their values and endless efforts.
  • Skilled people with knowledge the most irreplaceable factors employees bring are their skillset the skill includes the experience in specific fields , training programs and understanding of company's procedure cultures and work procedures.

EXPECTATIONS OF EMPLOYEES FROM THE ORGANIZATION

  • The organization should provide their employees greater autonomy you should keep a check on employees constantly as second guessing will lead will make them insecure about their job security and they will lose motivation to work in the organization.
  • Employees expect right tools for working the business environment like good technology for working.
  • Employees expect feedback taking time to review your employees efforts and let them know that you are aware of them will keep their morale boost up to the next level.
  • Employees expect flexibility of working hours and work from home when they need it.
  • They expect growing opportunities like promotion for them if they are capable of that.
  • They expect the care of their health and well being and provide them various health benefits.

EFFECT OF PANDEMIC ON EMPLOYEES EXPECTATIONS

As various companies have given their employees work from homes so employees expected the flexible working hours from the organization as there is rigidity the working hours of the employees in the office.

Companies have adopted the new technologies and employees expected that they will get training about using the technology in the right manner.

The most important thing pandemic has lead to loss of job and the employees expect now a job security from the organization.

HOW TO HELP EMPLOYEES WHO LOST THEIR JOB IN FIJI AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD

  • Reduction in the employee and employer contribution fund
  • Reducing the tax liability for them
  • Government should provide them various subsidies.
  • Reducing the rate of interest of credit in financial institutions.
  • Bank to waive charges of minimum balance in customer's account
  • pensioners monthly travel allowance reduction
