A 325 V sinusoidal voltage generator at 50 Hz supplies a load modelled by a
35  resistance in series with a 95.5 mH inductor. The loss of the transmission line between
the generator and the load is modelled by a series resistance of 5 . Calculate the average,
reactive and apparent power a) consumed by the generator, b) consumed by the load.
Determine the power factor at which the load is operating.

Please outline the method clearly.

Answers should be: 633.75 var of reactive power. 845 W of average power

(a)

In DC motor, quadrant of operation can be defined by the armature voltage and
current of the motor. By using an appropriate diagram, briefly explain the
definition of all four quadrant of operation based on armature voltage and current.

(b)

A chopper is used to control speed of 45.36 kW, 1750 rpm, 240 V, 189 A
permanent magnet DC motor with 0.01 Ω armature resistance. This chopper-fed
DC motor is able to operate in both motoring and braking mode of operations.
Given a chopper input voltage is 240 V and chopping frequency is 400 Hz.
Assume that the system operates in continuous conduction mode.

(i)

Sketch the motor-drive circuit as mentioned above and label clearly.

(ii)

Determine the chopper duty cycle during the motoring mode at rated
torque with 1000 rpm speed.

(8 marks)

(iii)

If the motor is operated in braking mode, what happened to the armature
current, Ia? Determine the chopper duty during the braking mode at rated
torque with 400 rpm speed.

Generally, a single-phase power is commonly found in domestic households, whereas a three-phase power is preferable for larger demands. For safety purpose, over-current protection components are compulsory in the electrical distribution systems.

i. Explain two advantages of a three-phase system compared to a single-phase system in the distribution system.

ii. Briefly describe the characteristic and the function of two types over-current protection device installed in the distribution board (DB) residential building.

iii. Miniature circuit breakers (MCB) with different current rating can be used to protect the individual sub-circuit. State the current rating of the MCB that typically used for:
• lighting,
• socket outlet (radial type),
• socket outlet (ring type) and
• air-conditioner circuits.

Q1)The following information pertains to Questions 2

Consider a non-magnetic dielectric material with a dielectric constant of 4 and a dissipation factor of 0.004.

What is the phase constant (β) for a uniform plane wave traveling in the medium?  Assume frequency of 5.6 GHz.   Type your answer in radians per meter to one place after the decimal, i.e., in the form xxx.x.

Q2) What is the attenuation in Nepers over 1 wavelength (product of αtimesλ where λ is the wavelength in the dielectric medium) for a uniform plane traveling in the medium? Express your answer to four places after the decimal, i.e., in the form x.xxxx.
