Expert Solution

Media has been very influential in terms of building up perspectives and images about individuals and groups. There are various mechanisms that have been working to make up for those identities. The concept/mechanism of self-fulfilling prophecy is one aspect that is related to behaving in a certain way which proves some societal belief.

The portrayal of media is very directed.- either it is creating some positive image about someone or it is creating some negative image. The groups who have been discriminated against/violated against and marginalized have been under the radar of various media teams. The media houses create a certain image and the marginalized group behaves according to those identities. The most important aspect is the power of media. It has been so influential that it can make someone do or make someone behave in a way where the individual might not like it but obliged to do.

There are various examples where the impact of media on creating/developing a self-fulfilling prophecy can be noticed.

  • Media has created an image that a particular religion is only making up terrorists rather than good human beings. Some people from that community start to have a strong association/ belief in that and they do unlawful activities [which they might not have done in the first place].
  • Sometimes media disregards the women and their status. They create an image that women should be confined to domestic work and childcare. Women in turn start to feel that way and not go out in search of jobs.
  • Media says that people from a particular country are criminals and they indulge in drug mafia. Many people from that country might not even indulge in these activities but they start to feel like one. They would start doing small petty crimes.
