• While the Pilgrims were Separatists, the Puritans were non-separating Congregationalists -- they believed the Church of England was the one true church and they were loyal to England, but not in the way they worshipped. They believed that "New England" worship and practice would be an example for Old England and the world.
• The Quakers took in the beliefs of others unlike the Puritans. A similarity between the two groups was their reason for coming to America. They both hoped to create a society that would be perfect and would purify the Christian religion.
• The Puritans believed in baptism and communion while the Quakers did not believe in any sacraments because they considered all acts sacred if committed to God.
• The Puritans held traditional beliefs about male and female roles. Female ministers were not allowed and only men were allowed to be elected as community leaders. The Quakers, however, believed strongly in gender equality.
• One of the first churches to allow women to hold leadership roles, Quakers also encouraged women to get an education. The Puritans viewed Native Americans as savages which is a belief the Quakers did not share.
• Quakers and Puritans are alike because they were both protistant groups who broke away from the Catholic church to form their own religions.
• Puritans and Quakers are different because the Puritans were very intolerant and the Quakers wished to live in peace with there nieghors. The Puritans actually persecuted the Quakers and believed they were heretics.
